East coast flood woes worsen

Floods in Kelantan and Terengganu
KUALA LUMPUR: The flood situation in the east coast has taken a turn for the worse, with over a thousand people in Terengganu and 664 more in Kelantan evacuated yesterday night.
Kelantan was lacking space to house its victims that the former railway station in Rantau Panjang had be converted into a temporary relief centre for 108 families.
In Kuala Terengganu, flood evacuees rose to 5,641 people compared to 4,627 people yesterday afternoon, a National Security Council spokesman told Bernama.
He said the most number of evacuees were in Hulu Terengganu involving 1,413 people; Kemaman (1,329) and Setiu (1,059).
He added that federal roads closed were Sungai Tong to Kuala Berang (all traffic) while the coastal road from Kuala Terengganu to Kota Baharu was closed to light vehicles.
The rivers of Berang, Kemaman and Marang all showed water readings above the danger levels.
In Kota Baru, water levels in Sungai Golok and Sungai Kelantan continued to rise, forcing 2,327 victims from 540 families to be evacuated to flood relief centres throughout the state yesterday night, compared with 1,663 in the afternoon.
A flood control operations room spokesman said Pasir Mas recorded the highest number of evacuees with 910, followed by Kuala Krai (872) and Tanah Merah (251).
Bernama reported Rantau Panjang remained submerged in more than one metre of water and the army, stationed at the Kelantan-Thailand border, had to use naval boats to rescue victims.
Water levels at Sungai Golok and Sungai Kelantan also showed water readings above the danger level.
No major roads were closed for traffic and no casualties were reported said the spokesman.
Meanwhile, KTM Berhad (KTMB) had to suspend its south-bound east coast inter-city express train services.
KTMB apologised for the inconvenience and customers can contact 03-22671200 for assistance.
The situation in Pahang and Perak has not changed much.
In Kuantan, till 5pm yesterday, 22 victims from three families had been placed in relief centres after their homes in Kampung Sungai Ular became inundated, said a spokesman from the state flood operations room.
In Ipoh, a spokesman at the Kerian flood operations room said flood victims remain sheltered at four schools – SK Bagan Serai, SJKT Bagan Serai, SK Matang Buluh and SJKT Simpang Lima.
