Pharmacists deserve our support

OUR frequent visits to government hospitals have enlightened us very much on the important role played by pharmacists. Recent discussion about their role in the healthcare sector is evidence that they should be recognised as professionals in their own right.

However, not many people talk about pharmacists when they make reference to healthcare. Those who have been attended by them would realise that they are the ones who contribute greatly in educating the public.

The letter from Pharmacist of Ipoh “A bitter pill to swallow for govt clinics” (The Star, Nov 12) reflects the great concern of some pharmacists for the overall welfare of the sick and the aged. I wish to congratulate the writer.

As front-line healthcare personnel, they too deserve our encouragement.

These are the people often forgotten although they meet with the same number of people as doctors and nurses. Very little is said about them and much less is done to affirm them.

When our Health Minister talked about perks for health personnel, the pharmacists were totally left out. But in spite of that, we still have pharmacists the likes of Pharmacist of Ipoh.

His suggestion for more allocation for medicines and drugs can actually be translated to mean more work for them.

He saw the need and was prepared to position himself to serve the public.

To promote public healthcare, doctors, nurses and pharmacists are needed all at one go. Therefore, the recent discussion about pharmacists being side-lined does require the authorities to do much more for the pharmacists.

Otherwise we are going to lose an important link in the health services.

The public has been served well by pharmacists who talk to patients sometimes longer than any doctor and they deserve to be recognised.

TENG,

Batu Pahat, Johor.
