NUSAJAYA: About 15,000 students from Johor study in private schools in Singapore, viewed by many as having a world-class education system.

Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development, Education and Higher Learning committee chairman Datuk Maulizan Bujang said that many of the students came from high-income families.

“Parents from these income groups prefer to send their children there as they can afford the high fees and preferred their children to be educated in an English medium school,” he said at the state assembly here Tuesday.

He added that the state education department was already looking into the matter and were looking at setting up various private schools within Iskandar Malaysia.

“We are also upgrading the local secondary and primary schools in terms of infrastructure, academic standards and also beefing up the teaching staff,” he said.

He was questioned by four different assemblymen on the large number of local students who preferred to enter schools in Singapore.

“The numbers do not mean that our local education system is of low standard but it shows that we have many high income families in the state that choose to send their children there.

“The Singapore educational system is not better than ours and it is not fair to compare the educational standards of private schools with our local ones,” he said.

He was answering question by Datuk Dr Adham Baba (BN-Pasir Raja), Dr Boo Cheng Hau (DAP-Skudai) and Ong Kow Meng (DAP-Senai).

Maulizan explained that the difference was that these private schools followed a different syllabus.

“Our local schools have been recognised as one of the best among developing countries and there is no question about standards,” he said.
