Heng: No need for Nov 28 EGM

PETALING JAYA: The Nov 28 EGM called by vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and his supporters should be put aside because a formula have already been drawn by the Prime Minister to end the crisis.

MCA information and communication bureau chief Senator Heng Seai Kie said there was no necessity for a second EGM when Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak himself has proposed the formula.

“The party will be able to achieve unity if both sides can reach a consensus under the formula.

“However, both factions must put the party interest before their own agenda,” she said when asked to comment on the Dec 1 target set by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for both factions to agree on ending the crisis.

In Cyberjaya, Liow said he was confident that the rival factions in the party would be able to come to an agreement before Dec 1.

“We will resolve it before the Dec 1 deadline. We definitely want to resolve the party crisis fast not only because our members are urging us to solve the problem but also because the community is looking at us.

“I would like to express appreciation to the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister for their advice and views on the party crisis.

“We are also listening to party and community leaders. We are committed to resolving this,” he told reporters when met at the opening of the World Health Organisation’s Global Service Centre by Muhyiddin yesterday.

Liow is among MCA leaders who have been pushing for MCA to hold an EGM to seek, among others, a resolution for the party to hold fresh polls.

Asked about the Nov 28 EGM, Liow, who is also Health Minister, said if all parties could agree to a date for fresh elections to be held, then the meeting would be called off.

“But first, we have to come to an agreed date and we want to do it as soon as possible. There are suggestions that the EGM be held together with the party’s annual general meeting (AGM),” he said.
