DPM sets Dec 1 deadline for MCA leadership

By MAZWIN NIK ANIS

Dec 1 deadline to end crisis

CYBERJAYA: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has set a seven-day target to get the rival factions in MCA to agree on a formula to resolve the party crisis.

The Deputy Prime Minister said he had begun discussions with a few party leaders.

“If possible, I want things to be settled before the Prime Minister comes back from his overseas trip on Dec 1. This is the KPI that I have set.

“I have set the one-week deadline so that the parties concerned will regard this matter with utmost importance and urgency,” he told reporters after opening the World Health Organisation Global Service Centre yesterday.

Muhyiddin said he was also prepared to listen to the views of some leaders of the Chinese community who have also expressed their concern about the crisis.

“I believe in a win-win situation but there is a need for understanding and sacrifice. This is an effort that needs some level of sacrifice from all parties concerned so that a solution to this complex problem can be attained,” he added.

On Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he had put forward a conflict-resolution proposal to MCA with high hopes of ending the party’s leadership crisis.

Najib, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman, had directed Muhyiddin to continue with follow-up discussions with the MCA leaders since he would be attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Trinidad and Tobago as well as a working trip to the United States.

It is learnt that holding a fresh election for the MCA was one of the issues discussed when Najib held separate meetings with the two rival groups in the party.

Admitting that the task that had been given to him was heavy, Muhyiddin stressed that he had no vested interest in the matter.

“What is happening in MCA is a party secret. I am hoping to get all parties to agree on a formula to resolve the crisis,” he said, adding he would remain tight-lipped on developments until an agreement was achieved.

Muhyiddin hinted that getting the party to hold a fresh election might be one of the ways to resolve the crisis.

“Everyone must agree to a formula. We cannot have a decision which is acceptable to some and not to others. I will be meeting the leaders individually and once everyone has agreed to a formula, then we can sit down together. It will be our initiative but ultimately, it will be the MCA’s decision,” he said.
