Police Act being studied before allowing public demos at stadiums

By ZULKIFLI ABD RAHMAN

KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry is studying requirements that are provided under the Police Act 1967 before allowing for public protests or demonstrations at stadiums to be held.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusop said the authorities will have to look at Section 27 of the Act and other laws regarding public gatherings before it allowed them to be held.

“Amendments to the laws must be made first,” he told Datuk Mujahid Yusof Rawa (PAS-Parit Buntar) at Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday.

However, Mujahid was unhappy that the matter was still being studied saying that the study was taking too long.

“We need to ensure that the problem of people being affected by public demonstrations or protests be settled soon so that we can hold peaceful demonstrations,” he added.

Ngeh Koo Ham (DAP-Beruas) said the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had said that stadiums could be used for gatherings.

“When we asked to hold a protest at a stadium in Ipoh, the police refused to allow us.

“There’s no need to amend the law. It’s adequate,” he added.

However, Abu Seman told them that the relevant laws must be examined first
