Green council to promote environmentally-friendly businesses

KUALA LUMPUR: A National Green Technology Advisory Council will be formed to accelerate the development of green technology in the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the council, to be headed by the Prime Minister, will support green technology initiatives in businesses.

“The Government will provide the necessary support for all parties keen to implement green technology,” he said during the Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award presentation ceremony last night.

Muhyiddin said the Government also wanted to promote greater awareness of business opportunities in green technologies.

He added that, as unveiled in the 2010 Budget last month, the Government would start with an initial RM1.5bil in soft loans to companies that supplied and utilised green technology.

Muhyiddin also said the Government would also unveil the National Energy Policy next month, which will emphasise on achieving energy efficiency and work towards reducing the country’s dependence on coal and crude petroleum oil as energy sources.

The Hibiscus Award is given to companies that display excellence in sustainable development and being energy and environmentally-friendly in their operations.

Denso Malaysia Sdn Bhd topped 30 other companies to bag the coveted Challenge Trophy for the award’s 2008/2009 cycle and the Exceptional Achievement Award.

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin said yesterday that he would leave it to Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah to decide whether to lead a parliamentary caucus to draft a Bill on royalty payments for oil-producing states.

He was commenting on an invitation by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to Razaleigh, to head the caucus. Anwar claimed Razaleigh accepted the offer, although the latter said that he had not made any decision.
