Residential schools list to be out by Dec 25

PETALING JAYA: Students going into Form One next year will know by Dec 25 if they have been selected into fully residential schools.

Education director-general Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom said the ministry received 95,826 applications for 6,600 places.

“I understand many parents want their children to study at the best secondary schools including residential schools but the basic objective of these schools is to give priority to rural students,” he said in a statement yesterday.

A total of 48,171 students achieved all As in this year’s Primary School Achievement Test (UPSR).

The ministry’s selection process for next year, he added, remained the same where 70% of places are reserved for students from rural schools and 30% for those in urban schools.

Alimuddin said the principals of residential schools have been given autonomy to choose 20% of students to be placed there.

“This is based on the school’s niche. As an example, if the school’s niche is in music then students with musical skills or background will be given the priority to be called for an interview and undergo other selection processes according to the school,” he said.

Alimuddin said the ministry also gave priority to students from families below the poverty line, adding that students in this category were given assistance for school fees and other needs.

As of Oct 31 this year, he said 5,794 students or 17.6% from the total 32,836 in residential schools had been given assistance to continue their education.

Students can check if they have been accepted into residential schools through the ministry’s website at www.moe.gov.my.

He said selected students have to register at one of the 53 residential schools on Jan 11, 2010.
