Donate to flood victims, Muslims urged

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday called on Muslims celebrating Aidiladha today to donate whatever they could to the flood victims in several states in the country.

He said the donation was to demonstrate the sacrifice made by Muslims to ease the sufferings of flood victims who had to celebrate Aidiladha at the relief centres.

“Contributions in cash or kind are needed especially after the destruction and damage to their belongings and property which is saddening.

“As such, on this auspicious day, let us not ignore them. The same goes for other Muslims who are facing hardships. They need whatever help possible,” the Prime Minister said in his message in conjunction with Aidiladha.

As of noon yesterday, about 5,000 people in Terengganu and Kelantan were still staying at evacuation centres after their homes were affected by the floods.

Najib said providing aid for the flood victims was also in line with the spirit of sacrifice and zakat to assist those in need such as the poor to show gratitude to God for His blessings.

The Prime Minister also called on Muslims to pray for the health and safety of the haj pilgrims in Mecca so that they could return home safely.

He also urged Muslims to celebrate Aidiladha in the spirit of goodwill.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in his Aidiladha message said the value placed on sacrifice and devotion implied in the celebration of Aidiladha should be taken as an inspiration to raise one’s faith in and devotion to Allah. — Bernama
