Helping small nations in combating financial crisis

By LIM AI LEE

PORT OF SPAIN: Malaysia firmly believes that it is vital to mobilise the entire international organisation system to support small developing countries in combating the global economic crisis.

We join the Commonwealth to urge the international community to constantly undertake strong commitments and sustained actions to help the most vulnerable states weather their economic downturn,” Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman said during the CHOGM Foreign Ministers’ meeting here on Wednesday.

He also told the gathering that Malaysia was committed to facilitate Small Island Developing Countries (SIDC) in addressing the need for partnerships at all levels to increase, amongst other things, their institutional capacity.

He said such a move would contribute towards achieving a more comprehensive, equitable and inclusive system that would take into account the interest of emerging and developing economies.

“Malaysia believes the need for unity, common focus and collective action in mitigating effects of the global economic and financial crisis and preventing its recurrence,” he said.

He called for greater cohesion between the international financial and development systems, encompassing trade, aid and the environment so that one works in favour of the other.

“Malaysia is ready to share its success stories and experiences in developments via human resources development and capacity building through efforts such as the Malaysian Technical Coopera-tion Programme.”

Anifah also said the Common-wealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) which he chaired, had decided to set up a working group to look at the proper procedures and processes involved following the suspension of a member country from the Common-wealth.

On the suspension of Fiji, the CMAG meeting reached a consensus to request for the heads of states to make a decision on whether to allow Fiji to compete in the Commonwealth Games.

Anifah would be presenting a report on CMAG activities from the 2007 to 2009 period to the heads of states and government s tomorrow.
