Heng: AGM on as planned, postponement allegations not true
By NG SI HOOI
KUALA LUMPUR: The MCA annual general meeting (AGM) scheduled for next Friday and Saturday will go on as planned, said MCA Information and Communication Bureau chairman Senator Heng Seai Kie.
She added that there was no intention to reschedule the AGM to a later date.
Heng said the party headquarters had received many inquiries asking whether the AGM would be postponed.
“The AGM for 2009 will proceed as scheduled on Dec 4 for the MCA Youth and Wanita wings, and on Dec 5 for the parent body,” said Heng in a press statement yesterday.
Heng said it was against the party constitution for any member, except for party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, to postpone the AGM.
“It is unfortunate that there have been claims by certain MCA members that the AGM will be postponed.
“Such allegations are not true and the people making such claims are behaving irresponsibly by placing the party in a precarious situation of being de-registered by the Registrar of Societies,” she said.
On Thursday, Wong Nai Chee, one of the three CC members who had requisitioned for the Nov 28 extraordinary general meeting (EGM), had said that they trusted that the AGM scheduled for Dec 5 would be deferred to a date to be fixed in conjunction with the proposed fresh elections.
Wong had also announced the EGM, scheduled for today at Wisma MCA, was cancelled, and a special briefing session would be held instead.
Heng stressed that the notice to convene the AGM had been issued in accordance with the party constitution.
“Any suggestions that the AGM scheduled from Dec 4 and 5 will be postponed is designed to confuse all central delegates and create chaos within the party.
“For the sake of party unity, I appeal to all MCA central delegates to ignore such unfounded rumours and to attend the AGM of Dec 4 and 5,” she said.
Meanwhile, Wong told reporters yesterday he still believed that the AGM and fresh elections could be held simultaneously.
He said this would be helpful to the central delegates as it will reduce cost and travelling time.
At this stage, Wong said he would not comment whether “who is right or who is wrong.”
“Be patient, I believe we will get a more constructive answer in a few more days,” he said.
