A-G looking at helping mum recover son in Belgium
SEGAMBUT: The Attorney-General is looking at the best possible method of helping Elis Syuhaila Mokhtar bring home her six-year-old son Ferris Mokhtar van de Ven who is believed to have been taken to Belgium by his father.
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said that Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail would look into legal implications and the best method of helping Elis Syuhaila.
The ministry has sought legal advice from the A-G, she said.
Elis Syuhaila, who was married to a Dutch man, has secured a custodial order from the Shah Alam Syariah High Court for her son.
“The case is complicated as it involves a lot of legal procedures. Therefore, we’ve requested Abdul Gani’s help to look at how the Government can bring the child back in accordance with the Syariah Court order,” she said.
Shahrizat said Elis Syuhaila had sought the ministry’s help but it had no jurisdiction over the matter.
“Abdul Gani is very concerned with cases like this, cases that involve two sets of legal systems as well as the syariah law.
“We must know that the syariah law is no less important than the civil law. We’ll wait for his advice,” she told press members at a Hari Raya Aidiladha event organised by Kepong Wanita Umno at Surau Mahmudiah here yesterday.
Shahrizat also advised Malaysian women to “know the risks” of marrying foreign citizens.
“Malaysian women need to know their rights here and also abroad or their husband’s country of origin if a marriage fails, especially when it comes to the custody of their children,” she said.
