More crime hotspots emerging, says Hisham
KUALA TERENGGANU: New crime hotspots are emerging in the country with these areas recording an increase in snatch thefts.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the Government had already declared 50 areas in Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Selangor as hotspots due to the high number of snatch thefts there.
“The crime rates in these hotspots have been effectively reduced through concerted and well-planned strategies by relevant enforcement agencies.
“However, other new areas are emerging. The ministry will declare these places as hotspots as well,” he told reporters after launching an Aidiladha event at Kuala Nerus near here yesterday.
Any area reporting an increase in snatch thefts should be placed on the ministry’s radar to enable preventive steps to be taken immediately such as deploying more police personnel there, said Hishammuddin.
“The Government will not hesitate to declare these areas as hotspots.
“Police presence and the deployment of mobile police stations can then be intensified,” he said.
Hishammuddin added that the ministry had also stepped up its crime combating efforts to achieve its target of a 20% reduction in petty crime.
