CC to decide on election how and when, says Soi Lek

KUALA LUMPUR: The MCA central committee will decide on how and when to hold fresh elections for members of the committee, said party deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

He said the matter would be discussed at the central committee meeting for a consensus, adding that its members have yet to be informed when the next meeting would be held.

“It is important that there is real consensus for the fresh election, and it must be held with full understanding. A fresh election will not resolve the crisis in the party if there is no love for the party and sincerity.

“The contest must not be a case where the winner takes all and the loser loses all, or else it will not solve the party crisis,” said Dr Chua who chairs a panel on fresh elections.

Vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and his supporters have set a 60-day time frame from yesterday for the election to be held.

On pushing for an early election as a way to expedite the return of peace and stability to the party , Dr Chua said: “A proper attitude and sincerity among leaders is important if we want peace and stability in the party.”

The term for the current central committee, elected on Oct 18 last year, will expire in 2011.

Under the MCA constitution, at least two-thirds of elected members in the central committee must resign or the central committee’s three-year term must end before the party can call for a fresh election.

Twenty of the 30 elected members in the central committee must resign before the fresh election can be called, said Dr Chua when commenting on the purported signing of undated resignation letters by 13 of the elected central committee members from the Liow faction.

The 13 included Liow, vice-president Tan Kok Hong and central committee members Lee Wei Kiat, Datuk Hoh Khai Mun, Datuk Wong Siong Hwee, Datuk Yu Chok Tow, Datuk Dr Yeow Chai Thiam, Dr Hou Kok Chung, Datuk Wee Jeck Seng, Datuk Liew Yuen Keong, Wong Nai Chee and Datuk Edward Khoo.

Eleven of them were present when Liow revealed the resignations at a press conference yesterday. The identity of the 13th elected central committee member was not disclosed.
