PUTRAJAYA: Kuala Lumpur is rolling out the red carpet for Chinese President Hu Jintao and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who are scheduled to visit the country next week.

Hu will be making his first state visit to Malaysia as the president beginning Nov 10, at the invitation of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin. He will be accompanied by his wife Liu Yongqing, a 140-member official entourage and an 80-member press corps.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman said Hu’s last visit to Malaysia was in 2002 when he was the vice-president.

He said the Chinese leader would have an audience with the Agong, who would be hosting a state banquet in honour of the visit.

Hu and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will hold a bilateral meeting on Nov 11 in the federal administrative capital here where both leaders are expected to discuss issues to further enhance bilateral co-operation.

“The exchange of high-level visits between the two countries is important to promote closer bilateral relations,” Anifah told reporters after a meeting with his Turkish counterpart Dr Ahmet Davutoglu on Tuesday.

The Foreign Minister said Susilo would also be making a two-day state visit beginning Nov 11 and Malaysia was the first country the Indonesian president would be visiting after being re-elected for a second term recently.

Susilo is scheduled to have an audience with Tuanku Mizan when he arrives on Nov 11 and a four-eyed meeting with the Prime Minister, followed by a delegation meeting has been arranged for Nov 12.

Anifah said both leaders were expected to put several issues on the discussion table, including enhancing co-operation in areas which were beneficial to Indonesia and Malaysia, maritime borders, Indonesian workers, food and energy security and anti-terrorism co-operation.

On his meeting with Davutoglu, Anifah said both countries have agreed to explore the possibility of joining forces to help Iraq rebuild its economy.

“Iraq has approached Malaysia and Turkey to assist them in the re-building process and we believe the results would be more substantial if we can join hands in this process,” he said.

Anifah also said that both countries have also agreed to take concrete steps to increase bilateral trade volume and expand the scope of bilateral co-operation by venturing into new areas.
