Ex-Tamil school headmistress and husband murdered

BUKIT MERTAJAM: An elderly couple have been found murdered in their double-storey home in Lengkok Betek in Taman Sri Jaya, Sungai Rambai here.

The couple, who were in their late 60s, have been identified as retired Tamil school headmistress M. Kannamah and her husband P. Alagirisamy, who was a broker.

Police are now looking for the couple’s 36-year-old jobless son, who has gone missing from the house with their two grandsons.

Penang CID chief Senior Asst Comm (II) Wan Abdullah Tuanku Said said the body of Kannamah, who is believed to have been strangled, was found on the staircase while that of Alagirisamy, who sustained head injuries and had strangle wounds, was discovered in his bedroom upstairs with legs bound.

The couple had apparently invited their relatives over for a belated Deepavali lunch on Saturday, but those who turned up then had found the gates and door locked.

SAC (II) Wan Abdullah said police forced their way into the house at about 6.30pm yesterday after a relative failed to contact the couple.

He said initial investigations showed that some jewellery worn by Kannamah were missing but that the house had not been ransacked.

There was also no sign of any break-in, he said, adding that the bodies had been sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for post-mortem.
