Nazri: BTN courses will be revamped

By TEH ENG HOCK

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Civics Bureau (BTN) will revamp its controversial co-curriculum to be in line with the 1Malaysia concept, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz.

"The co-curriculum will be brought in line with the Prime Minister's 1Malaysia, which means it will be more inclusive and will not divide Malaysians.

"If we have a course for only one racial group, then that is not 1Malaysia," he said at the Parliament lobby.

He said the Cabinet had agreed to the revamp, with the Chief Secretary to the Government overseeing the process.

BTN courses had come under pressure recently over allegations that they were a form of political indoctrination and that participants were being taught disunity and racial hatred.

Last week, the Selangor government decided to bar all state civil servants, students in state-run higher learning institutions and employees of state government-linked companies from attending courses organised by the BTN.

Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Mansor Othman had said the state government was considering a similar ban.

Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim had said Pakatan Rakyat-led states were considering replacing BTN courses with their own.

When it was first set up in 1974, BTN was known as the Youth Research Unit under the Culture, Youth and Sports Ministry.

It was moved to the Prime Minister’s Department in October 1981 and renamed BTN in June the following year.

BTN started establishing state branches in 1986 and now has 14 state branches.
