By DESIREE TRESA GASPER and AUSTIN CAMOENS
NUSAJAYA: The 15 councils in the state came under fire at the State Legislative Assembly Monday for various issues including inefficiency and wastage.
At least eight assemblymen, from Barisan Nasional and the opposition, took the councils to task for bad service, abuse of funds, poor maintenance and projects which had become white elephants.
Lim Kee Moi (BN - Yong Peng) said the implementation of government policies was the responsibility of the councils.
“However, many still view the councils as being inefficient and unable to meet their needs,” she said, She said the councils also did not maintain public facilities well and there were claims of accidents that had happened because of “unsafe” public facilities.
“We also see a lot of big projects that have become white elephants,” she said.
She was also against a proposal to raise rates to increase the profits of the councils, saying this would only burden the people.
Osman Sapian (BN - Kempas), Datuk Abdul Hamid Abd Rahman (BN - Machap), Munusamy Mareemuthu (BN - Permas), Ng Lam Hua (DAP - Mengkibol), Ong Kaw Meng (DAP - Senai), Dr Boo Cheng Hau (DAP - Skudai) and Chia Song Cheng (BN - Pengkalan Rinting) also expressed concerns over other problems related to councils.
