Padang quake aftermath: Our kids are alright
PADANG: Parents of Malaysian students who resumed their studies in earthquake-stricken Padang will be happy to know that they are doing well.
Datuk Dr Junaidy Abu Bakar, the director of the Malaysian Students Department in Indonesia, said 160 of the 329 Malaysian students enrolled at Universiti Andalas (UniAnd) in Padang had resumed their studies at the university while the rest would be placed in universities in Malaysia.
“We are helping the students in UniAnd the best we can and I am making weekly trips (from Jakarta) to check on them,” he told Malaysian journalists who accompanied Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam on a goodwill visit to the university on Wednesday.
Mohd Ali also presented a contribution of RM10,000 on behalf of the Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam secretariat, a non-governmental organisation he heads, to help Malaysian students with their expenses.
A magnitude 7.6 earthquake in Padang on Sept 30 left over 1,000 people dead and hundreds others injured besides causing untold damage to homes and buildings. The university also sustained damage.
Several students said they had overcome the trauma of the earthquake and were ready to resume their studies.
Nur Zulaikha Ismail, a medical student, said that although it was said Padang was experiencing minor tremors daily, she was determined to finish her studies.
A. Adeeban Koomar, also a medical student, said they were making final preparations for examinations which would be held soon. -- Bernama
