Backbencher: Set up panel to draft code of ethics for MPs

SET up a committee to draft a code of ethics for Members of Parliament, suggested veteran backbencher Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad (BN - Johor Baru).

“We often discuss and debate on code of ethics for other institutions but not for us.

“We can set up a committee comprising the Speaker and other MPs to discuss how to have a code of ethics to improve MPs’ standard, what should be done and what should not,’’ he said when debating on the Supply Bill in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

Shahrir also suggested that the Government adopted an open policy towards privatisation and not on a first-come-first-served basis when granting contracts.

Stressing on outcome or end result as priority, he said the first-come-first-served basis would only provide those close with the Government an advantage over others.

He suggested placing advertisements for privatisation projects to filter those who qualified.

“Such privatisation scheme would benefit the public at large and not serve as a platform to create entrepreneurs without qualification nor standard,’’ he said.

Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun admitted that there were delays in child related cases in court but the matter involved many parties and not the court alone. The ministry, she said, had discussed with the Chief Justice to find a solution to the problem but found that the cause of the delay was contributed by various quarters.

“In this respect, discussions with related agencies like the Attorney-General’s Chambers and police have been held to look into the matter,” she said in reply to Fong Po Kuan (DAP - Batu Gajah) during question time in the Dewan Rakyat.
