Gazette Sept 16 as a holiday
AN Opposition MP has suggested that the Government gazetted Sept 16 as a compulsory holiday under the Employment Act 1955.
“I urge the Government to amend the Act immediately or employers may not recognise it as a public holiday.
“Otherwise, it remains a rhetoric in politics. It will not be recognised by companies,’’ said Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid (PKR - Kuala Langat) when debating on the Supply Bill yesterday.
He added that former prime minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein gazetted May 1 as a public holiday back in 1974 and now urged his son Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, the Prime Minister, to do the same for Sept 16.
“Is this a holiday for 1Malaysia? If it is, then gazette it under section 60D of the Employment Act 1955,’’ he said.
Another Opposition MP Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa (PAS - Parit Buntar) questioned the delay in caning part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, who was found guilty of drinking beer by the Pahang Syariah High Court.
“After 50 years, we still do not have a syariah prison and no syariah officer to carry out caning. Is Syariah law second class?’’
Dr Mujahid also commended government auditors for doing a good job and recommended the Public Accounts Committee investigate cases highlighted in the Auditor-General’s Report.
Nurul Izzah Anwar (PKR - Lembah Pantai) highlighted the incident where the Brickfields police seized items, including microphones, during a seminar at her constituency despite having permits from the police and City Hall.
