Show tolerance when carrying out duties, says Ti
MCA central committee member Datuk Ti Lian Ker has asked law enforcers to be tolerant when carrying out their duties, especially over religious matters.
“In the spirit of 1Malaysia and to observe our multi-racial and multi-religious society, we must exercise tolerance,” he said, commenting on the seizure of 15,000 copies of the Bible in Bahasa Melayu over the past few months for using the word ‘Allah’ to identify God.
Ti, who is the MCA non-governmental organisation bureau chairman, said if the word ‘Allah’ has been used since independence of the country, one should not overreact.
“We must uphold the Federal Constitution on freedom of religion. I call on the enforcers to be more tolerant,” he said here yesterday.
Also criticising the seizure was Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham (DAP - Sitiawan) who said the act of confiscating the Bibles imported from Indonesia had gone against Article 11 of the Federal Constitution which protected the freedom of religion.
“Islam is the country’s official religion but others are free to practise their respective religion,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby here yesterday.
Ngeh called on the Government to return the books and also lift the ban on the usage of the word ‘Allah’.
