JOHOR BARU: Police have detained a snatch thief, in his 20s, who robbed and attempted to molest a woman earlier this week.
The suspect and an accomplice on a motorcycle pushed the victim off her motorcycle near Lima Kedai in Gelang Patah here at about 5.45am on Nov 1.
They then took the victim’s gold necklace, mobile phone and RM52 in cash.
The suspects then attempted to take the victim’s clothing off but she managed to escape and sought help at a toll plaza some 2km away.
Police detained one suspect after raiding a house in Gelang Patah the next day.
“In relation to this case, we are looking for an S. Sathis Kumar to assist in investigations,” Johor deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm I Datuk Jalaluddin Ab Rahman said.
“His last known address is in Taman Kota Masai in Pasir Gudang,” he told a press conference here on Thursday.
He said that the suspect who has been detained was remanded until Nov 9.
In another case, a Singaporean woman sustained light injuries after she held on to her handbag when two men on a motorcycle tried to snatch it from her.
The woman was going to her car at the parking lot of a hypermarket in Plentong recently when the suspects attempted to snatch her handbag. However, she held on and shouted for help, prompting the suspects to flee empty-handed.
She sustained injuries on her waist and legs after falling down as they fled.
The victim lodged a police report and provided the motorcycle’s registration number.
SAC I Jalaluddin said that the suspects, aged 24 and 26, were picked up the next day after police raided a house in Taman Permas Jaya.
“Neither suspect has a police record. However we found a handbag at the house and we believe it may belong to another victim,” he said.
