Pakatan reps to send petition on Jais director
AT THE DEWAN RAKYAT
SELANGOR Pakatan Rakyat MPs will submit a petition to the Sultan of Selangor soon to seek a review of the position and duties of Selangor Religious Affairs Department (Jais) director Datuk Mohammed Khusrin Munawi.
Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin said the department’s action in arresting former Perlis mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin amounted to questioning the authority of the Sultan as the head of religious matters in the state.
She added that Mohammed Khusrin should also explain the guidelines used by Jais in deciding who was allowed to give a religious lecture in Selangor.
Zuraida said according to information she had obtained, Jais had failed to give strong reasons for barring seven ustaz (religious teachers) including an International Islamic University Malaysia lecturer, from lecturing in Selangor.
“The director should explain the guidelines to clear the air on who is allowed or barred from giving religious lectures in Selangor,” she told reporters at Parliament House yesterday.
Zuraida also refuted Moham-med Khusrin’s statement reported in Malaysikini where he was quoted as saying that she and Ulu Klang assemblyman Saari Sungib had prevented Jais officers from carrying out their duties to the extent that the police had to be called.
“Saari and I were only trying to pacify the people attending Dr Asri’s lecture, who were shocked over his arrest,” she said.
She urged Mohammed Khusrin to be more responsible when issuing statements and called on him to retract his accusation.
