Hone skills of young tennis players
LATELY, it has become a trend in this part of the world (e.g. Doha, Dubai and Hong Kong) to hold tennis events heavily bank-rolled by the respective governments of the host countries. Malaysia is no exception.
As an avid tennis fan, I am thankful that we were served with the ATP tournament back in September and, soon, we can look forward to a WTA event in February.
However, I am surprised why we are having a tennis exhibition in December, just three months after the ATP Malaysian Open and two months away from the WTA Malaysia Tennis Classic.
The tennis exhibition “Showdown of Champions” will be featuring four top women players who are paid for their appearances here.
On top of that, the organisers also paid Anna Kournikova to be the brand ambassador of the event.
Do we need so many tennis events in such a short time?
Instead of organising tennis exhibitions every year which do not directly benefit local players, the Government should start looking into funding tennis courts and facilities as well as engaging professional coaches to prepare our young tennis players for the Malaysian Open and Malaysia Tennis Classic, which are permanent fixtures in the ATP and WTA calendars for the next five and two years respectively.
Young players in the national hockey team have been asked to emulate Nicol David; it’s time we do the same for young Malaysian tennis players.
