Liow: 16 can call for EGM

PUTRAJAYA: The 16 members of the MCA central committee (CC) have the right to call for an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) despite the secretary-general declaring the requisition as unconstitutional, said MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

“I think they have the right to call for an EGM, and as secretary-general and party officials, they have to respect the constitution of the party and ensure that whatever rights provided for under the constitution are respected,” said the Health Minister after launching the ministry’s Innovation Day celebrations yesterday.

Liow was commenting on a statement by party secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng, who said on Wednesday that he was not duty bound to call for a second EGM as requisitioned by the group of 16 CC members.

Wong had said the party’s Legal Bureau, headed by newly-appointed chief Lim Hong Sang, viewed the call as unconstitutional and unworkable because the requisition did not fall within the ambit of certain governing articles in the party constitution.

On MCA’s internal crisis, Liow said he thanked the Prime Minister for his attention and welcomed Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s call that the decision made by the Registrar Of Societies (ROS) to restore Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek as deputy president must be “legally correct”.

Liow said he had asked his lawyers to study the ROS decision and decide the next course of action.

Najib had said on Wednesday that the ROS made a “purely legal” ruling based on the MCA constitution in reinstating Dr Chua as the deputy president.

In KUALA LUMPUR, Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said another option to get the second EGM was to obtain support from one-third of the MCA central delegates.

He added that this was something CC member Wong Nai Chee, also a lawyer, would have to study.

Nai Chee had previously said he represented 15 other CC members in calling for a second EGM to pave way for fresh party polls.
