MRR2 safe for use after repairs, says Shaziman
THE whole length of the 35km-long Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) is safe for traffic following rectification work that was carried out on a damaged link, Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said.
He said the repairs were carried out after cracks appeared on a flyover located in Kepong in June, 2004.
The repairs were carried out by Bridgex Sdn Bhd on Nov 9, 2006.
However, he said, defects were later discovered on the carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendon which was installed on Pier 28 of the highway.
“A tie-frame was later installed, while safety netting was placed on the cross-beam and this was completed on Sept 6, 2008,” he told Datuk Mahfuz Omar (PAS – Pokok Sena).
Shaziman said the problem on Pier 28 occurred when three of the 18 CFRP tendons were damaged. He said the CFRP’s job was to transfer pressure to the cross-beams.
“The installation of the tie-frame was carried out in accordance with various procedures including the British BS 5400 standard,” he said.
In a supplementary question, Mahfuz asked whether the ministry realised that the use of CFRP might create a chemical reaction which could weaken concrete materials.
To this, Shaziman said standards must be adhered to, adding that engineers provided the “ultimate design” for structures that fulfilled safety requirements.
