Flood eases in Terengganu, more evacuated in Kelantan (Update 1)

KUALA TERENGGANU: More flood evacuees in Terengganu were allowed to return home as the flood in affected areas subsided further this evening.

A state security council spokesman said as at 4pm, only 1,107 people remained at 21 evacuation centres in Besut, Dungun, Setiu and Hulu Terengganu.

There were those who had been allowed to return home but chose to remain at the centres for fear of a second wave of the flood.

"We have closed down 32 evacuation centres since noon today but they will reopen in the event of another flood," he said.

The water level in all rivers was now below the danger level, he said.

Only Jalan Pengkalang Merbau-Tiong Pelong was still closed to light vehicles, he said.

In KOTA BARU, the number of evacuees as at 3pm stood at 2,328, mostly in Pasir Mas (1,322) and Tanah Merah (706), said state flood operations control centre chief Shahnaz Nurul Amin.

The Kuala Krai flood operations room was closed today as there no more flooding in the area.

Shahnaz said food supplies would be sent to two evacuation centres namely Masjid Gabus in Rantau Panjang and SK Kubang Kual as the disaster relief committee in Pasir Mas had difficulties sending them as roads were closed due to the flood.

The water level at Sungai Golok and Sungai Kelantan was still above the danger level this evening, she said.

All roads in the affected areas are passable to vehicles except for the one connecting Kota Baru and Pantai Cahaya Bulan which is still closed to all vehicles.

In ALOR SETAR, 474 people in Padang Terap were evacuated as at 3pm today.

A flood operations room spokesman Salim Mahmud said among the affected areas are Kampung Tanjung, Kuala Jani, Kuala Semeliang, Rambutan, Kejai and Malau.

He expects more will be evacuated as the water level in Sungai Padang Terap is rising and has breached the danger level.

Agencies under the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry including the Welfare Department (JKM) have been instructed to be on standby to help flood victims, said its minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

"Presently, JKM is providing basic necessities to be distributed to people affected by the latest floods," she told reporters after launching the national-level World Children's Day celebration in Puchong.

In PUTRAJAYA, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said his ministry had mobilised its youth volunteers to provide relief assistance in floodstricken states.

The volunteers numbering some 5,000 youths would work together with government agencies and nongovernmental organisations in providing assistance to flood victims, he said in a statement here.
