Jais officer red-faced over wrong definition
By AU YEONG HOW
KUALA LUMPUR: A religious department enforcement officer admitted in the close proximity (khalwat) case between celebrities Norman Hakim and Suhaiza Suhaimi or Memey that he had used wrong definitions in his sworn statement.
Kyairool Nizam Khairuddin said this when questioned by the couple’s counsel Fakrul Azman Abu Hassan at the Syariah Lower Court here yesterday.
The Selangor Religious Department (Jais) enforcement officer said he used the wrong word. He said he had used the word “hidden (tersembunyi)” when it should have been “covered (terselindung)” when explaining Section 29(1)(a) and Section 29(1)(b) of the Selangor Syariah Criminal Enactment 1995 under which the couple were charged.
Norman and Memey are alleged to have committed close proximity at the former’s office in Taman Ukay Perdana between 1.45am and 3am on Oct 30 last year.
In the news:Norman and Memey leaving the Syariah Lower Court in Kuala Lumpur Friday. “So do you agree that you have used the wrong definition when you used the word hidden instead of covered?” Fakrul asked.
After Fakrul pressed further, Kyairool, who has been working with Jais for over a year, agreed he had given the wrong statement and definition.
Fakrul added that it was embarrassing for a Jais officer not to know the definition of the act. To this Kyairool said yes.
Kyairool also admitted that he had given a contradictory statement when Fakrul pointed out that there were differences between it and the statement given by the head of the raiding party Abdul Rahman Lai.
In his statement, Kyairool said Abdul Rahman along with three other officers had gone upstairs during the raid, whereas Abdul Rahman told the court that some officers went up while he kept watch downstairs.
Judge Salehudin Yatim set Dec 4, Jan 8 and 15 and Feb 5 next year to continue the proceedings.
