Group retracts apology to former Perlis mufti
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Syariah Lawyers Association has retracted its apology to former Perlis mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin.
The association is also defending its action in sending a memorandum to the King to protest against Dr Mohd Asri’s appointment as head of the Islamic Da’wah Foundation Malaysia (Yadim).
Association president Mohamad Isa Abd Ralip said the association would not retract the contents of the memorandum.
“From what we understand, it was he (Dr Mohd Asri) who made copies of the memorandum.
“He then published the memorandum in his personal blog and distributed it to the media and other people,” he told a press conference here yesterday.
Mohamad Isa also claimed that Dr Mohd Asri had gone back on his words by divulging details of the discussions in a meeting on Thursday.
The meeting was also attended by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom and Islamic Development Department director-general Datuk Wan Muhammad Sheikh Abdul Aziz in Kuala Lumpur.
“We are disappointed with Dr Mohd Asri’s actions, which betrayed the agreement made in the meeting that was chaired by (Datuk) Jamil Khir,” he said.
“His behaviour clearly shows that he does not respect the minister, who was acting as a mediator,” Mohamad Isa added.
