Cabinet committee for indigenous people in East Malaysia
KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has agreed to the setting up of a special Cabinet committee to address issues relating to the indigenous communities in Sabah and Sarawak.
He said the committee comprising of federal ministers from the two states would look into matters related to challenges faced by the bumiputra in them and that this was a way for the government to look for amicable solutions to integrate the communities concerned in the unity and development of the nation.
“We are rational and moderate. We think of each other. I wish to see issues resolved so as to benefit all quarters.
“So we will have this committee as a means of finding solutions (on outstanding issues),” he said when opening the United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation’s (UPKO) national convention here Sunday.
Najib also asked for the people to understand his capacity as prime minister in dealing with issues and sensitivities of the people.
“Please understand. It is not an easy job. I am standing on a tightrope trying to balance and satisfy the needs of the people.
“I have to look after the interests of everyone. But I am doing the best I can to make sure that this government, the Barisan Nasional government cares for all.
“I do not want people causing hurt to others. So, whatever problems we have, we discuss it among ourselves within closed doors and look for one solution that everybody can agree on,” he said.
Najib also said Barisan component parties need to always stay relevant.
He said they should realise their success should not be based on the history of their past successes.
“No matter how great the contributions of leaders past, the component parties must always remain relevant to the existing reality.
“We must find ways to make the Barisan constantly relevant. A party that fulfils the expectations of the people because the Barisan is anchored on solid ground,” he said.
He said it was vital for Barisan to always have new ideas and fresh approaches so that the government was seen as dynamic and progressive.
Najib also said since becoming prime minister, he intended that the people benefited from all aspects as Malaysians through the 1Malaysia concept.
“I am happy the 1Malaysia idea is doing well and it seems to be getting popular. Everybody seems to be doing something for 1Malaysia.
"There is even a 1Malaysia cake! It shows that people, regardless of religion and race, are doing something together for 1Malaysia,” he added. -- Bernama
