RM60mil for upgrade of Ipoh airport

IPOH: The Cabinet has approved the allocation of RM60mil to extend and upgrade the underutilised Sultan Azlan Shah Airport.

The grant is to be used to extend the airport’s runway by 200m from the present 1.8km and to upgrade the airport terminal. Work is expected to start next year.

Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said a government survey showed that Perak had immense potential to become a top tourist destination.

“With the extension, the government hopes more budget airlines will be attracted to use the airport,” he said yesterday after a ground-breaking ceremony for a market at the Tanah Hitam new village in Chemor near here.

Currently, only Firefly flies out of Ipoh with daily flights to Singapore.

On another matter, the Tambun MP said elected representatives had also been roped in to ensure that projects under Budget 2010 were carried out on schedule.

“The YBs can also write to the Prime Minis-ter or the Deputy Prime Minister if projects in their area are facing problems,” he said.

Najib has ordered his ministers to closely monitor projects under Budget 2010 to ensure they are implemented on time.

He wants the 160 projects listed to start according to schedule as this was the commitment given by the Government.
