PAS committed to Pakatan Rakyat, says Hadi

GOMBAK: PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang will not be stepping down from his position despite pressures from certain parties for him to do so.
He said he was elected by the delegates and thus would not disregard their trust.
“I will not take away this trust. Insya-Allah, we will overcome all challenges,” he said when closing the party’s political seminar in Taman Melewar here yesterday.
More than 1,000 delegates and observers attended the seminar to discuss the party’s spiritual leadar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat’s call for the certain pro-Umno leaders in the party to be kicked out.
At a press conference later, Abdul Hadi said the seminar had reiterated PAS strong stand against any effort to pursue unity talks with Umno.
“There is no way for this issue to be raised again. This is PAS and Pakatan Rakyat’s stand,” he said.
He added that there was no reason for PAS to leave Pakatan because it had been proven that the coalition could bring change to the people.
Earlier, in his keynote address, Abdul Hadi said the party was committed to bringing genuine change in the country through Pakatan Rakyat.
The relationship between PAS and its other partners in Pakatan, he said, was based on a mutual understanding to fight injustice in the society.
“However, this does not mean that we will sacrifice our ideology,” he said. Referring to PAS as a preaching party, Abdul Hadi said its relationship with other Pakatan partners was strong yet flexible.
The partnership, he said, was the key to Pakatan’s success in checking Barisan Nasional’s “arrogance.”
“In discussing PAS’ relations with other parties, I would like to reiterate for the umpteenth time that we will continue to be with Pakatan to lead the people towards a genuine change.
“We will play a more active role as what we have already decided and debated in two previous PAS general assemblies,” he said.
At the same time, Abdul Hadi said, PAS needed to strengthen itself in order to win the votes from the Muslims as well as non-Muslims.
“We need to get the votes of non-Muslims as this is the reality of a multiracial society,” he said, adding that the party would need to practise an open policy with everyone according to the concept of dakwah (preaching) and syariah (Islamic law).
