Hornet tragedy mum learns of kids’ deaths
By JACK WONG
KUCHING: The young mother who lost all her three young children in a hornet attack on Oct 3 has finally found out about their deaths — exactly a month later.
Tan Wan Chew, 29, did not find that out from relatives but from a newspaper report about another hornet attack that killed a 12-year-old boy recently.
The report also referred to the attack involving Tan, her three children and a brother.
Tan’s children Chen Sze Ting, eight, Sze Ying, six and Chun Jie, three, died in the attack.
The news came as a big shock. She broke down and cried on the shoulder of a relative at the Sarawak General Hospital when she read about their deaths.
“She was very emotional,” said a family member.
Tan is still unable to talk but has started to consume liquid food through a tube attached to an opening in her throat.
In the latest incident, Year Six pupil Sazali Sapiee of SK Kampung Bako died after he was stung by hornets while playing in a water catchment area on Monday.
On Oct 3, Tan, her three children and her younger brother Lan Chia, 11, were attacked by a swarm of hornets while on a late afternoon stroll near their house in Batu Kawa.
Lan Chia has since recovered.
The family member said Tan was very sad and hardly slept for two days after reading the report.
