1,100 in Kedah evacuated

ALOR SETAR: Floods in Kubang Pasu and Padang Terap districts have forced 1,101 people to move to 19 evacuation centres.

A state Flood Operations Centre officer said that as of yesterday, 799 people were staying at 17 centres in Padang Terap while 302 were at two centres in Kubang Pasu.

“In Padang Terap, 233 people were allowed to return home after flood waters receded in their villages,” said the officer. “More than 1,000 people were evacuated on Saturday.

“The Sungai Bata water level in Kubang Pasu recorded a height of 1.38m, below the danger level of 3.5m,” he said yesterday.

However, the Sungai Kuala Nerang water level in Padang Terap district was at 17.8m, above the 17.1m danger level.

The operations centre is closely monitoring the situation in the Kota Setar district after the Sungai Pantai Johor water level reached 2.08m yesterday, above the 2m danger level.

“Flood waters from Padang Terap and Kubang Pasu would also normally flow into the district,” said the officer.

In Perlis, floods again hit Alor Biak forcing 54 people to seek relief at evacuation centres.

State Welfare, Women’s Development and Special Functions Committee chairman Mansor Jusoh said the people were moved to the centres at 8pm on Saturday.

He said 39 people were being sheltered at Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Beseri while the rest were at Dewan Seri Malau.

Flood victims numbering 245 from the Titi Tinggi, Panggas and Batu Bertangkup areas were allowed to return home last night.
