70 heritage sites identified

MALACCA: The National Heritage Depart-ment is identifying 70 new sites to be gazetted this year.

Information, Communication and Culture Ministry secretary-general Datuk Wira Kamarudin Siaraf said that so far 66 heritage sites including artefacts were being gazetted as national heritage.

“We will continue to identify heritage sites in the country,” he told reporters after giving away prizes to winners of the Kembara Warisan 2009 here yesterday.

Kamarudin said the department would enhance expertise in the field of conservation especially in the rehabilitation of heritage buildings.

He said it had taken measures to ensure that the continuity of national heritage was maintained.

On the Kembara Warisan, he said the programme was to enrich newsmen’s knowledge on national heritage.

More than 200 media representatives and ministry staff participated in the Kembara Warisan treasure hunt from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca.

Meanwhile, ministry heritage commissioner Prof Datuk Siti Zuraina Abdul Majid said plans were underway to unearth and expose remnants of the famous 16th century Portuguese era A Famosa Fort in Bandar Hilir here.

Archeological works would be carried to locate the 1.5km fort wall that encircled St Paul’s Hill.

“We do not intend to reconstruct the entire Kota Melaka (fort) because a large part of its wall is underneath existing buildings.

“We will expose the wall where we can so the public can get a better understanding of the fort’s design,” she told reporters.

The department has allocated RM12.8mil for archaeological and restoration works, including acquiring the former Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank of Commerce for use as a heritage centre.
