Pulau Duyong a hive of activity as it readies for yacht race
KUALA TERENGGANU: While the monsoon season is causing havoc in many parts of the country, the Monsoon Cup fever is kicking up a storm here, too.
The usually sombre Pulau Duyong is a hive of activity as preparations for the Asian Match Racing Championships (AMRC) get underway.
AMRC, which opens the month-long match-racing season, will start today with a practice session for competing teams.
The first race will be flagged off tomorrow and the final is scheduled for Thursday.
All systems go: Some of the yachts belonging to teams competing in the Asian Match Racing Championships 2009 in Pulau Duyong. The competition is an important qualifying round for the Monsoon Cup in December, with the winner getting a ticket to the event dubbed the Formula One of Sailing.
The World Match Racing Tour comprises 10 events around the world.
“We have lowered eight boats into the waters off Pulau Duyong to prepare for the race. We are actually ahead of schedule in terms of boat preparation for the race,” said yacht manager of the Monsoon Cup David Mills.
He said the sunny breaks over the last two days had enabled his team to complete most of their work on time.
Some of the teams have started arriving in Pulau Duyong for registration and to familiarise themselves with the surrounding of the purpose-built marina complex and resorts while more teams are expected to arrive on Sunday.
Umpires for the race are also expected to arrive on Sunday morning for a Race Committee meeting.
The four umpires for the Monsoon Cup will be Keith Swinton and Torvar Mirsky from Australia, Elizabeth Rountree from the United States of America and Anoushca D. Souza from India.
