MCA talks hit deadlock on fresh party polls
KUALA LUMPUR: The conflicting factions in MCA apparently failed to agree on when fresh party polls should be held.
There were also differing views as to whether the election should involve the entire party or just members of the central committee (CC).
“They are still in a deadlock,” a party source told Bernama yesterday. “They have not reached any agreement on fresh party polls.”
At a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, the warring factions were apparently still adamant about their respective choice of timing.
Sources said the faction headed by party vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai insisted on having the polls within 60 days, the latest by January next year and it should only involve the CC members.
However, the faction headed by party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and his deputy Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek was said to be pushing for the elections to be held by March next year and that it should encompass all, including the Youth and Wanita wings.
There is talk that both factions may return to the formula adopted to resolve the MCA crisis in 2002 following the party leadership’s decision to take over Nanyang Press Holdings Bhd — that is to return to status quo.
“This means everybody will be back to their original positions until the next party elections in 2011,” said another source.
Some CC members apparently are not keen on having fresh elections, particularly those who do not hold any government post.
There is also speculation that the party’s annual general meeting (AGM), scheduled for Dec 5, may be postponed due to the stalemate.
Any decision on this will have to wait until tomorrow when the CC holds its emergency meeting.
