No plans for PM to meet Chin Peng

By ROZAID A. RAHMAN and MARTIN VENGADESAN

PETALING JAYA: Former Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) secretary-general Chin Peng’s hopes to meet Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak during the latter’s official visit to Thailand is likely to be dashed.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to be in Narathiwat on Dec 9 and to date, the Protocol Unit of the Prime Minister’s Office has not received any confirmation or directive to include a meeting with Chin Peng as part of the itinerary.

“Unless there’s a directive from the Prime Minister, there will not be any change to the official itinerary,” a senior officer at the protocol office told mStar Online yesterday.

In a meeting with the Malaysian Chinese press corps in Bangkok several days ago, Chin Peng had expressed his hope to meet with Najib after he learnt of the latter’s upcoming visit. The meeting was to enable him to relate his intention to return to Malaysia.

Meanwhile in Haadyai, veterans of the Haadyai Peace Agreement signed on Dec 2, 1989 between Malaysia and Thailand and former CPM guerillas gathered to mark the 20th anniversary of the signing of the treaty.

Nearly 800 delegates, most of whom were former CPM members, met at the Lee Gardens Hotel, site of the original signing between the three parties.

Many residents from the four peace villages established at Banglang, Betong, Yaha and Sukhirin made the journey to see their former comrades.

Chin Peng and former CPM chairman Abdullah CD were present along with Thailand Deputy Interior Minister Thaworn Senneam.

No official Malaysian representative was present after former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Rahim Nor pulled out.
