A near miss for six Indonesian cleaners living upstairs

JOHOR BARU: At least six people, who were living on the upper floor of a mamak restaurant in Stulang Darat, managed to escape alive during an explosion at the outlet.

The workers, all Indonesians and believed to be cleaners, were staying on the upper level when yesterday’s 2.15am explosion ripped through the restaurant beneath.

Johor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff who visited the scene said police would be recording statements from all relevant people to piece together what had happened.

Police investigations revealed that the Indonesians were not workers for the restaurant as the units were owned by different owners.

There are four double-storey shop lots in the area, which are mainly food outlets.

The Stulang Corner restaurant is strategically located at a main road that is being upgraded to link Permas and the new Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) in Bukit Chagar. There is only one other mamak restaurant along the main road near the CIQ complex.
