RT volunteers nab suspects

KOTA BARU: Rukun Tetangga volunteers here caught two suspects after a member relayed information through walkie-talkie to other members about a robbery in Wakaf Che Yeh.

It started when robbery victim 18-year-old Muhammad Alif escaped from the two suspects who wanted to rob him at Jalan Sultan Ibrahim at 1pm yesterday.

He called his father, a RT member, and gave him the men’s motorcycle registration number. The father, known as Pak Ali, used his walkie talkie and informed the others.

By 3pm about 30 volunteers came to know of the robbery and were on the lookout for the two suspects.

The volunteers then saw the suspects trying to rob another victim at a phone booth at Wakaf Che Yeh.

When the suspects saw the group they rode off but abandoned the motorcycle along Jalan Kuala Krai due to the traffic.

“They went in opposite directions. One of the suspects was nabbed about 200m from the motorcycle.

“The other was found hiding near a store in Jalan Telipot three hours later wearing only his shorts,” said Pak Ali.

The suspect led the volunteers to where he hid his clothes and a kitchen knife.

District OCPD ACP Zahrudin Abdullah said the suspects were believed to be responsible for 10 cases of petty thefts and armed robberies.
