PM proposes ‘Rukun Wilayah’

By JAYAGANDI JAYARAJ

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan should have their own set of tenets similar to the Rukun Negara.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi made the proposal in launching the Federal Territories Day celebrations at Taman Titiwangsa here yesterday.

He called on the Federal Territories Ministry to work on the tenets as soon as possible.

Rukun Wilayah – as the tenets will be called – is envisaged as a set of principles for the people in the three Federal Territories to hold on to and remember their city, be proud of it, and to make it a better place for everyone.

“The successful development of the Federal Territories lies in the efforts of the people who live in the cities, and they should carry out tasks and services with a concern for high quality delivery,” he said.

Abdullah said the Government was doing its bit in providing better facilities to the public, but the onus was also on the city dwellers to make it a better place in terms of services.

“This encompasses all businesses, big or small, taxi services to gardeners ... to protect and care for the natural environment, including the rivers.

“We must be efficient, loving and neat, so that when people visit, they will experience everything nice,” he said in his speech.

The launch saw about 3,000 participants from government departments and agencies, non-governmental agencies, volunteers, residents’ associations and the security forces engaged in marching, cultural dances, drum performance and brassbands. .
