Desperate housewives of Pulau Ketam

Other News & Views

THE housewives in Pulau Ketam are desperate. There has been an increase in China dolls plying their trade in the fishing village.

Eight houses in the village have been turned into brothels. In their desperation, the housewives have turned to the MCA for help, reported China Press.

Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan paid a visit to the island a few days ago.

The housewives are worried that the large number of foreign prostitutes would affect their lives as well as those of their teenage children.

There have been many cases of family quarrels after the husbands spent long hours at these “houses” on the pretext of having a beer or two.

The daily said the brothels charged their mostly middle-aged customers between RM60 and RM80 in each visit.

However, it would cost between RM3,000 and RM5,000 a month to “keep” a foreign woman.

Some residents of Pulau Ketam have even rented out their houses to the pimps. After the issue was highlighted and following Ong’s visit, the operations have stopped.

When the daily’s reporters went to the place, the “brothels” were empty. Telephone calls “for service” were not answered.

The residents said the police should have stopped the China dolls who arrived as tourists from operating.

Pulau Ketam police confirmed that it received numerous complaints from the locals and had launched many surprise raids. But no “customers” had been caught.

“Each time we raid the place, there are only girls from China with valid tourist visas,” said the police.

The daily said that while the housewives were unhappy with the presence of the China dolls, the husbands felt that their wives should spend time making themselves “a little more attractive.”
