Malaysian drug mule jailed in Australia
BRISBANE: A judge sentenced a Malaysian woman to eight years in prison for smuggling cocaine from Brazil into Australia.
Customs officers arrested Ramia Jimson, 46, at Brisbane International Airport a year ago after finding about 1.8kg of cocaine hidden in a false bottom of her suitcase.
Prosecutor Glen Rice told the Queensland state Supreme Court on Friday that Jimson had been selected for a random bag search on arrival from Brazil.
Defence lawyer Dennis Lynch said Jimson, who pleaded guilty to drug trafficking, was offered US$2,000 (RM7,400) to smuggle the drug.
Police estimate the cocaine had a street value of more than US$1.3mil (RM4.8mil).
Jimson planned to use the
money to improve her poverty-stricken life, her lawyer told the court.
Judge Peter Lyons sentenced a tearful Jimson yesterday to eight years in prison without the possibility of parole for four years and six months.
She had faced a potential life sentence. — AP
