Python lays 165 eggs in captivity

KUALA LUMPUR: A reticulated python, one of the world’s largest snakes, laid 165 eggs in captivity at the Cave of Reptiles in Batu Caves here recently.

Arun Raveendaran, 23, who runs the Cave of Reptiles, claimed it was a rare occurrence as female pythons in captivity usually laid 30 to 100 eggs only.

He said the python, estimated to be 7.6m long, laid the first 65 eggs a couple of days ago and 100 eggs after that.

“There may be more to come in the next few days.

“We will incubate all the eggs, which will take 60 to 70 days, and release them back to the wild,” said Arun.

He added that the cost of running the Cave of Reptiles, which was opened last year and houses more than 100 species of local reptiles, was sponsored by the Batu Caves temple.

Reticulated pythons are commonly found in South-East Asia.

The longest snake discovered was a 10m reticulated python, found on Sulawesi island, Indonesia, in 1912, according to the Guinness World Records.
