Much ado about useless plaque

I READ your report, “Memorial plaque’s broken pieces fetch RM42,900” (The Star, March 23) and would like to express my disappointment and anger over it.

The world is facing a serious economic slowdown and yet Pakatan Rakyat did nothing whatsoever to really help the rakyat. Instead, they erected a plaque to commemorate their so-called “Tree of Democracy”.

But it ended up vandalised anyway and then, they organised a useless and money-wasting auction to sell off all the broken pieces of the plaque. I thought nobody would attend the auction and the broken pieces would not be sold. But I was wrong. It fetched up to RM42,900!

Most of the broken pieces were sold to businessmen. I wonder why they did not put their money to better use, such as giving it to charity.

To them and all the Pakatan Rakyat supporters, the broken pieces are worthy to be kept. But to me, the broken pieces are just useless garbage.

We the rakyat are facing hardship and are struggling to make ends meet. We don’t need a plaque to commemorate an emergency meeting held under the tree, and we certainly don’t need another new, stronger and vandal-proof plaque.

Did they have a police permit to hold the auction at a public place? I hope the Ipoh Municipal Council will remove the plaque again if another one is erected under the tree in the future. The authority could even chop the tree off, once and for all.

CHUAH PING SHIEN,

Kuala Lumpur.
