Accept tiger park criticism, CM urged

By MANJIT KAUR

GEORGE TOWN: The people have given constructive criticisms on the state government’s proposed tiger park project, and it was not right for Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to lash out at critics.

State Gerakan treasurer Ng Fook On in a press statement said that groups such as the Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers (Mycat), Sahabat Alam Malaysia and World Wide Fund for Nature Malaysia (WWF-Malaysia) had already given their professional views.

Ng, who is also a spokesman for the Penang Gerakan Cat Watch, said not only the organisations above were opposed to the project, but even Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi -- also Lim’s chief of staff -- seemed to expressed some reservations in his blog over the proposed project.

“When Lim made the proposal he had asked for public views but now when the people have given their views, instead of thanking them he is unhappy," he added.

It was reported Thursday that Lim had lashed out at critics of his proposed tiger park project, saying they should come up with constructive criticism.

Lim said their objections should be substantiated with facts and not just emotions, otherwise they were just wasting their time.

Accordng to Ng, Mycat had said that the country had 40 zoos and that maintaining them was already a challenge for the authorities.

“WWF-Malaysia had said that the issue of procuring tigers for the proposed park was problematic as wild tigers cannot be removed from their natural habitat under the Protection of Wild Life Act," he added.
