‘Zombies’ a problem at Kg Baru foodstalls

Compiled by AICHUN, TAN SIN CHOW and A. RAMAN

THE zombie-like behaviour of illegal parking attendants around Kampung Baru is scaring off customers who frequent the area for food, reported Kosmo! Ahad.

The parking attendants who patrol the streets demanding money from customers who park there are obviously drug addicts looking for an easy way to earn money.

A shopkeeper who refused to be identified said the presence of these “zombies” started a few months ago.

“Their presence has caused problems to the people who frequent the 24-hour eating stalls and shops here. It also sullies the reputation of Kampung Baru as a food haven,” he said.

> Men marrying via “nikah bawah tangan” (underground solemnisation of marriage) to women from Batam, Indonesia are looking for trouble as the marriage is not recognised as legitimate under the laws of Islam, warned Metro Ahad.

It quoted a Kota Batam Islamic Religious Affairs officer as saying that Malaysian and Singaporean men have been going to Batam to marry the local women there using unqualified “jurunikah” (marriage official), charging a fee of RM3,000.

He noted that most men failed to carry out their responsibilities as a husband after the marriage.

“Most of them have a first wife in their own country and keep their second marriage in Batam a secret,” he said, adding that the women had to turn to prostitution to feed themselves and their children.

Puspa Indah Sari Bacrho Papilaya, 41, who claimed to have married a Malaysian from Johor named “Ahmad” in 1993, said she had to start servicing clients while working as a waitress at an entertainment centre.
