Demerit system for national service camps
TAWAU: The National Service Training Department (JLKN) will implement a demerit system this year to evaluate and upgrade the quality and management of National Service (NS) camps.
Director-general Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil said with the system, camps would be given points or minus points based on their performance and compliance with the conditions set by JLKN.
"It is aimed at ensuring that facilities provided by camp operators meet our requirement. Camps that do not comply will have points deducted while those with food poisoning cases will have more points deducted," he said after a visit to San Shui Camp near here Saturday.
Hadi said a committee has been set up to find the best way to implement the demerit system adding camps that provide facilities above the requirement would be given additional points and allowed to accommodate more trainees.
"JLKN will not send trainees to camps that do not comply with conditions in the agreements. This is to ensure their comfort and safety and avoid negative perception towards national service."
On the case of two trainees in Perlis who had diarrhoea after taking soap water to avoid training, Hadi said they were given five days off.
JLKN was waiting for their medical reports from hospital before deciding on the next course of action including allowing them to defer training.
He also said the programme for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students would speed up realisation of the "One Malaysia" concept introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
This was because the "One Malaysia" concept stressed on unity and integration of the races, religions and cultures to become one Malaysian race.
Hadi said a survey showed that the programme has been successful in promoting the "One Malaysia" concept as 85 percent of the 384,504 trainess admitted that it had united them. - Bernama
