CM: Moves to sabotage Penang-bound investments

SINGAPORE: Certain government officials have tried to sabotage Penang-bound investments by diverting them to other places, including Iskandar Malaysia in Johor.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said he was aware of such attempts.

“The attempts were done verbally, but when the investors insisted on investing in Penang, they (government officers) had no choice,” he said after delivering his views at the 2nd Asean and Asia Forum here on Friday.

Lim spoke on “Political Challenges Leadership in Turbulent Times” attended by 300 participants from the government, private sector and think-tank groups.

He added that despite these obstacles, the state managed to woo RM10.2bil worth of investments last year compared with RM4.7bil in 2007.

“One of our selling points is the emphasis on running a clean government. We also have special committees to help resolve investor issues.

“Investors can even come to me direct if they face problems,” Lim said.
